氨水，指氨的水溶液，有强烈刺鼻气味，具弱碱性。氨水中，氨气分子发生微弱水解生成氢氧根离子及铵根离子。“氢氧化铵”这个名称并不十分恰当，只是对氨水溶液中的离子的描述，并无法从溶液中分离出来。氨在水中的电离可以表示为：反应平衡常数Kb=1.8×105。1M氨水的PH值为11.63，大约有0.42%的NH3变为NH+4。氨水是实验室中氨的常用来源。它可与含铜离子的溶液作用生成深蓝色的配合物，也可用于配置银氨溶液等分析化学试剂。
用作农业肥料。化学工业中用于制造各种铵盐，有机合成的胺化剂，生产热固性酚醛树脂的催化剂。纺织工业中用于毛纺、丝绸、印染行业，作洗涤羊毛、呢绒、坯布油污和助染、调整酸碱度等用。另外用于制药、制革、热水瓶胆（镀银液配制）、橡胶和油脂的碱化。
